Here’s your guide to facial filler treatments.
Fillers
People often confuse facial fillers with neuromodulators, such as Botox. First, we’re discussing facial fillers and why they may be the best option for you.
What Are Facial Fillers?
Facial fillers (often called dermal filler injections) are made of a gel-like substance that smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. They also enhance the natural contours of the face. Facial fillers are also commonly used to plump lips, accentuate cheekbones, reduce hollows underneath the eyes, and lift your facial contours.
Dermal fillers are injected right underneath the skin to bring out your natural features. They’re often made of hyaluronic acid, a popular anti-aging ingredient that’s produced naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid fillers can last as long as a year, though it depends largely on the type of filler and the other ingredients in the filler.
Different Types of Fillers
Juvederm is probably the most popular of all of these fillers. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. There are various Juvederm fillers and the one you choose depends on where you need injections. These Juvederm fillers can be injected into the chin, cheeks, wrinkles, and mouth.
Who Should Get Facial Fillers?
Facial fillers are best for clients who want to highlight the natural contours of their face and are looking to replenish any lost volume. Depending on the filler, they can also tighten loose skin.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
Dermal fillers are considered safe. They come with few side effects and are generally well-tolerated by most patients. This is why they’re approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Even though dermal fillers are considered safe, it’s essential to know the side effects. These include:
- Tenderness and pain
- Bruising
- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Redness and discoloration
- Bumps and nodules
- Infection
- Inflammation
- Migration of the filler
The most important best practice is to choose a professional plastic surgeon to perform the injections. Plastic surgeons have the most expertise in facial anatomy and injection safety, which is essential to see results without terrible side effects. You should also know ahead of time if you’re allergic to any ingredients in the injectables. Don’t get injections if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
Neuromodulator
Are facial fillers not what you’re looking for? Instead, you should look at neuromodulators such as Botox.
What Are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are injectable proteins that relax the muscles. Wrinkles often form as a result of facial expressions. The neuromodulators relax the facial muscles, preventing future wrinkles from forming. In addition, relaxed facial muscles will make your face look smoother and will soften existing fine lines and wrinkles.
Different Types of Neuromodulator
Botox is the most famous type of neuromodulator. It was the first therapeutic and cosmetic neuromodulation. It can treat multiple types of fine lines and wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, glabellar lines (the lines that form between the eyebrows), and forehead lines.
Who Should Use Neuromodulators?
If you want to soften existing fine lines and wrinkles and prevent future wrinkles from forming, then you will benefit from neuromodulators. They’re also ideal if you want to prevent wrinkles; most neuromodulators can be used on clients as young as 18.
Keep in mind, neuromodulators are only meant to be used on certain parts of the face. Neuromodulators are best used on fine lines around the eyes and forehead. If you struggle with fine lines around the mouth, you’ll benefit more from facial fillers.
Are Neuromodulators Safe?
Yes. Botox, in particular, is FDA-approved for a number of different treatments. It’s approved for anti-aging purposes as well as for the treatment of an overactive bladder, chronic migraines, cervical dystonia, incontinence, underarm sweating, and spasticity.
Botox has been FDA-approved since 2002. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t side effects. Common side effects with Botox include:
- Pain
- Slight headache
- Bruising
At worst, you could experience asymmetry and overall poor results. Be sure you only get Botox done by an experienced plastic surgeon. This is the best way to ensure you don’t experience these negative side effects.
In addition, don’t get Botox done if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Make sure you look at the ingredients to ensure you’re not allergic to any of them. You also shouldn’t get Botox done if you have Myasthenia Gravis or Guillain-Barre disorders.
Keep in mind, your plastic surgeon may not recommend Botox for a number of other reasons, such as your facial anatomy.
How Long Do Neuromodulators Last?
Botox usually lasts four months. In some people, the effects can last as long as six months.
